My Coffee Loves Me

Every morning after I wake up I drag my sorry butt into the kitchen and make coffee. In my case, it's the equivalent of a quad shot of espresso. A tea cup filled to the brim.

When I've gone to the local barista and ordered a "Quad" people around me - and sometimes the baristas themselves - gawk in amazement. Then make some ridiculous comment about me being some kind of caffeine addict.

Well, truth be known, there is less caffeine in four ounces of espresso than in an 8 ounce cup of brewed coffee. (Here is the really boring, lectury part of this write up.) You see, the longer a coffee bean is roasted the less caffeine there is in the bean. An espresso bean is roasted longer than other types of bean which also makes it less acidic and bitter than your standard everyday roasted beans. For me that means no acid stomach or heart burn and I used to get both from drip coffee.

So, if like me, regular old coffee makes your esophagus feel like the burning road to hell, which is now your stomach, maybe you should switch to a couple of shots of espresso. You still get your caffeine, just in a smaller dose. You eliminate the acid and best of all - your coffee tastes the way it smells. The latter I have always felt was a bonus of drinking espresso.

But if espresso is still a bit bitter for you, add a touch of milk. Maybe brown sugar. Lavender honey. Whatever makes you happy.

I love my coffee and I want my coffee to love me back.

Sun or Moon in 160

It was 8:30 and I was confused
as I peered through the lens.
Had I shot the moon but it looked like the sun.
Or, had I shot the sun and it looked like the moon.

55 Thanks isn't enough

Can you thank someone who has made sacrifices and
worked until they dropped?
Handled adversity and taken care of the sick,
knowing all along they needed a hand to hold
or a shoulder to cry on
when none was available.
It may not be much,
but take my hand and accept my love.
You’re deserving.

Radiation Man

When you've gone through surgery to remove cancer from your body and survived the chemicals they pump into you "just in case" there might be more cancer, you might think it's all over but a few simple blood tests. But nooooo. They still want to experiment with you.

Now some of it IS just the simple blood test, mixed with the usual blood pressure and stepping on the scale - every three months. Big deal - get poked with a needle and answers questions like, "Did you lose that weight on purpose?' To which you answer, "Yes, I was tired of being a lard ass and decided to add years instead of pounds."

But I digress, once a year they also want you to have what is called a PET/CT scan. I think the worst part of getting a PET/CT is not getting to drink your morning coffee, but that's another story. The first thing they do is take you into a holding cell and have you remove any metal you might be wearing - watch, glasses, the spare change in your pocket, your belt. You almost expect them to ask you to remove your shoe laces and walk over to the finger printing area (not that I have any experience in such things). Instead, you just get to lay down on a bed with wheels.

There you are laying on a gurney and nice nurse Natasha walks in with a needle that is surrounded by a lead shield. "What's with the heavy equipment around the needle," you ask. To which Nurse Natasha says, "The protection is for me not for you. Since I have to work with this stuff several times a day I'd grow a third arm because of the extended exposure without the lead shield. But please be reassured that injecting it into you is just fine."

Great! So there they go - sugar coated, radio active isotopes injected into your veins. They then tell you to lie still for an hour while the radiation permeates every little blood vessel you have in you. What's the deal? Well, it seems cancer cells are hungry little devils and will gobble up the sugar that is injected - you see you have been fasting for 12 hours and for 24 hours couldn't eat any carbs (carbs = sugar) - and the sugar just happens to have these happy little isotopes along for the ride. So once the cancer cells have had their fill, they will show up in this scan as "hot" spots. These hot spots make Dr. Oncology very excited because he makes money from killing cancer cells. "Weeee," he says, "more cancer to kill. I can pay for my new vacation home in Brazil." Dr. Oncology loves topless girls in thongs.

Anyway, you lay there under a warm blanket bored out of your mind waiting for someone to finally come into your room and stick you in some machine that turns you into a bunch of little rainbow-like pictures. Lights low. Warm blanket. No coffee. Sleep happens. One could get used to mid morning naps, but employers frown on such things. As they would if you brought a Snuggie into work and twisted off the overhead fluorescents. Employers just don't have a clue as to how to relax. Didn't Einstein nap during the day?

After your nap a boy named Steve that looks as old as your teenage son walks in, tells you to take a last minute leak so his pictures are better. You fully expect what you release into the toilet will glow. He then wheels you into the room with the scanner. Once there, Steve tells you to lie down on this platform in front of the scanner, put your arms over your head and stay completely still for the next thirty minutes while the machine runs through its paces. Now, mind you, the scanner is barely wide enough to accommodate the width of your shoulders and has no head room. They could bury you in it.

Have you ever been told something like - Don't eat the hors d'oeurves before the guests arrive - or - Don't squirm around or you will ruin my PET/CT pictures? Eating hors d'oeurves and moving around are all you can think about after that. You lay there as this machine whirs, clicks and moves you back and forth and all you can think about is that you have itchy spots all over your body - your nose itches, your ear lobe itches, so do your nether regions. It is as if the statement of "lay still" released an army of ants all over your body.

Then there is the whole arms over the head deal. Sounds like no big thing, but you try doing anything in a stationary position for thirty minutes and you, too, will become a big pussy. I don't know how those idiots on Survivor do some of the ridiculous stunts they are asked to perform. Of course they are playing for a million dollars instead of just being a wimpy whiner who wants to get the hell out of a motorized coffin.

Suddenly out of nowhere, young Steve's head is hovering over you and he says a polite version of "Pick up your stuff out of the locker and get out of here. I have people waiting for this machine." So you fill your pockets back up, put on your belt and head out to find the nearest barista knowing the results won't be offered up until Dr. Oncology steps away from his Brazilian Beach daydream long enough to explain the pretty pictures and, with a somewhat disappointed tone, tell you the cancer is still in remission. While this meeting won't take place until September 16 you already know all you have done is spent the insurance company's money and delayed Dr. Oncology's plan for the Brazilian vacation home.

Creative Captioning

Try your hand at a caption on this photo. I was walking my dog in our neighborhood and happened on to this sign and couldn't resist it. Write your own caption in my comments and come back in a day or so. I won't post any of the caption comments until Tuesday at the earliest so you won't be swayed by anyone else's creativity....EXCEPT the caption I wrote which was sent to the lovely and talented Mrs. Monkey Man in a text pic.

Have fun and enter as often and you want.
I will also have a special prize for the winning caption.

Happy Hour must start at 3.

Smokin' Sunday 160

The cigarette hung loosely from her painted lips.

"Got a light," she cooed in a voice

that would melt the coldest of hearts.

“Smoking causes wrinkles,” he said.

Splash Fiction Friday 55

Alone and with no help in sight I struggled
in desperation and exhaustion,
bringing to bear my knowledge and energy.
Stay calm. Swim with the current.
But I was getting cold, my body nearing hypothermia.
I have always followed the rules and
I most certainly couldn't disobey this time.
After all, the sign clearly said…

This is a Flash Fiction Friday 55.

God bless Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtain for the SNL News segment and that famous line Ackroyd would deliver before going off on whatever ridiculousness Jane had just been spouting. I have always wanted the opportunity to say that to someone and only in the most malicious way.

Unfortunately, I am still waiting for that opportunity, but I so had the urge today because I was truly dealing with an ignorant slut. Fucking uneducated idiots I have to work with drive me nuts. This one happens to be the same person I went off on a blog rant on back in June. Now that I think of it it was also one of the last times I worked with her.

So I'm not going to bore you with RGB conversion to CMYK and what happens to color as a result....oh wait, I just did....if you're still there just bear with me. This is a client who, let's just say, is sharp as a marble. You know the kind, you explain something to them and they give you this blank stare and say "uhuh" like they have a clue when in reality what's going through their teeny little walnut size brain is "I wonder if my hair grows when I sleep," or something equally as cerebral.

This is the same girl who told me her husband rebroke his arm after a "fall". The first break was snowboarding and the second break was because she jumped on his back and he broke it again in the fall she created. Now if it was some fun bedroom thing it might have been understandable, but this was just because she's stupid. The real scary thing is - she has kids. My God I feel for those kids being raised by this cracker ass, trailer trash, lame brain.

Ooo, I'm feeling better already. I seldom use this blog as a platform to grouse, but I've got to tell you, this beats drinking over my problems which of course doesn't make a problem go away, it just delays having to face it. Glad I don't go there anymore.

I just wish this idiot's name was Jane because just to make myself feel even better I have always want to say, "Jane, you ignorant slut."

Sunday 160 - My Love

The look is coquettish

and makes my heart skip a beat.

Her silky, white skin

beacons to be caressed.

“I love you,” she whispers.

I am the luckiest man on earth.

Back to Muddy Waters Cafe

Since the Beach Boys enjoyed their breakfast so much at the Muddy Waters Cafe in Tillamook, we decided to share the heart stopping goodness with Mrs. Monkey Man (monkey sister couldn't get herself out of bed in time to join us). The six mile drive from Netarts to "downtown" Tillamook came with growling stomachs and great yearning for much needed coffee. Mocha for Mrs. MM and a quad espresso for me. Gotta have the caffeine in the morning.

Muddy Waters Cafe was not quite a crowded as it was Friday. I think there is a weekday work crowd that frequents the establishment or maybe they were just recovering from a tough night at the Tillamook County Fair where intake of elephant ears, corn dogs, cotton candy and other midway fare left no room for their regular morning stop and the hearty meal of hash browns, eggs and toast.

The family plopped itself down in a cozy booth with a view of both the street and kitchen. Once again, Judy, the MWC proprietor, was busy in the kitchen but not so busy that she couldn't yell a "Be right with ya" greeting. She served some folks at the counter and popped over to our booth with her cheery smile and warm attitude. Recognizing my son and me from the day before, she welcomed us back and was happy to see we brought in more mouths to feed.

As with the previous day's breakfast, Judy served us sinfully delicious comfort food - biscuits and sausage gravy, hash browns, a sausage omelet and lots of sides. When she came back later to bus our table - remember this is a one woman shop unless she has to call her sister in for help - Judy all but sat down to chat with us. The initial topic of conversation was the Tillamook County Fair and how her daughter and grandchildren were coming down from Portland to visit and catch the demolition derby - smashing cars is a big deal along the Oregon coast apparently. Judy's eyes absolutely lit up as she talked about her grandkids and pointed to the many photos of them on a pastry case near the kitchen.

We asked Judy where her daughter was coming from and it turned out to be very close to an area we used to live in - the Silicon Forest of the Northwest. Judy also filled us in on a bit of her history. She and her husband Keith decided to make Tillamook their "retirement" home and commuted to Tillamook on weekends to build their dream house. Keith was an engineer and Judy worked at Reeser's Fine Foods in Beaverton, Oregon. When they came down on the weekends they lived in a tent on their property and literally camped out while hammering nails and cutting lumber for their new home. A true do it yourself project through sun, rain and God knows what other type of weather comes out of the Pacific Ocean headed inland.

Judy cooked meals over a camp stove and they had only a rented porta-potty for taking care of business. It was all business for Keith and Judy until one night they decided to tidy up and hit the local Elks Lodge for dinner and dancing (Remember...this is Tillamook, Oregon home to more cows than people). While there they ran into a couple that came up to them and asked if they were the Tent People from down the street. This was the first of many friendships the Tent People from Portland formed with the locals. As she told this story, tears started coming to Judy's eyes. She apologized then explained that Keith - the love of her life, the man she said she waited 50 years for - had died just this last Spring of colon cancer.

Mrs. Monkey Man stood up and hugged Judy to let her know it was okay to feel the pain and express it. This was fresh and Judy was still hurting. It also hit very close to home for Mrs. Monkey Man, you see, I was only two years removed almost to the day from surgery to remove cancer from my colon and it had been less than eighteen months since I had finished chemotherapy. I was a survivor. Judy's Keith was not. We felt her pain.

Judy's story of love found and lost was tragic, but she is a fighter and is carrying on by being of service in the only ways she knows how - cooking, smiling and sharing her gratitude and love for life with everyone she comes in touch with.

We love you, Judy, and will frequent your establishment every time we visit Tillamook.
