Skeletal remains picked to the bone
from days or weeks
of bobbing and tossing
in the surf
finally landed
on a deserted shore.
Nearly unrecognizable extremities
reached out in awkward directions
for the answer to the question –
for the answer to the question –
Why?
Why had I been torn
unmercifully from my home?
Why now just a discarded piece of art?

I can't get past the incredible texture in this shot... the B&W highlight the driftwood so well.
Perfectly balanced in fifty-five words, MM. Why, indeed? Perhaps for the photographer's sake...
This is great!
nice shot monkey...love the look and feel of drift wood...great 55..had me wondering where you were going...
my 55
certainly makes you wonder what kind of a journey it had and what started it on its way.
I used to spend hours on the Calif coast drawing driftwood. They have a raw beauty
Nicely done 55
No need to wait for this 55
Hopefully to end up under glass as someone's coffee table to be admired by many forever.
Very nicely done! I was totally thinking it was a human until the very end.
xo
What a beautiful piece of driftwood! My husband has wanted a piece of driftwood for years...but we've ended up with a crooked piece of dead log instead. Oh well. One day! :o)
Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for visiting me! I was actually here a bit earlier but blogger wasn't playing nice. ;o)
I always wonder about their journey. Love the photo and very nicely done. Have a great Friday.
I could use that in my front yard MM...
Excellent 55.
I'm a huge driftwood fan, Michigan has more shoreline than any state in the Union.
Thanks for playing, and have a Kick Ass Week-End...G
This so reminds me of a piece of driftwood my first husband and I found back in the early 70s. We had a lot of people in our car and crammed that driftwood into the car somehow, brought it home, and my husband made a lamp out of it. It is in my view right now on the end table. :)

Beautiful shot, and words to match.

Aww, poor tree. Lovely pic though.
The imagery in your 55 is so powerful I worried there'd be blood. The driftwood image is fantastic!
Perfect match!
oh their journey...
I love driftwood. This lovely piece was no doubt ripped from life and tossed cavalierly aside by someone named Andrew or Katrina.
Yes, wonderful!
Please , have a great weekend!

Even the bones of trees have voices. Lovely photography, MM.
You brought this to life. Excellent imagery.
But it's lovely! I'd give it a place in my home (if I had the space!)
Wonderfully written!

I am getting my 55 on again!

Not only what was washed ashore, but your 55 is truly a piece of art also!!! Well done.
My 55 is a double whammy this week, two for the price of one. Of course, as always, you need to scroll down below my Friday's Show n Tell.
The link is HERE I'd love to have you stop by for a visit.
Where it will end, the driftwood does not know...yet it turns out so beautiful..

really like this one of you - i like driftwood but have never thought about it "lost home"
wasn't sure what was washed up the shore and somehow displaced till the end --great photo--I felt lost too!
happy friday
Nice 55 and a nice pic to go with it! Some people pay big bucks to have nice pieces of driftwood like that one.
Love your piece! great-
I have lots of driftwood around- haven't done my 55 yet.
We like these flash fiction pieces, keeping us satisfied and yet wanting more.
I love picking up pieces of driftwood whenever I'm at the beach or on a shoreline. But somehow I think I would need help with your piece! :D
I'll never look at driftwood quite the same way now...
I really liked the mystery of this...how you're not sure what has washed ashore.
I love the twist with the photo ending. it is a beautiful shot and your word play is fantastic as well. I enjoyed your contribution very much.
The power of a flood .... Nature is awesome. Your words and photo highlight that well.
MM
A wonderful 55er, and adore your photo, one thing we do have is fantastic driftwood on our shoreline,
Cheers,
Joanny
posted mine way late in the eve of friday..
The thoughts of tree carcasses, thats a new twist on tree hugging! HAKAWE, as GMan says.
Thanks for this one...people like me believe that "discarded" piece is something to treasure.
I will be back to read your 160 tomorrow.
In the meantime....
